Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 12: Aosta / Breuil-Cervinia, Plateau Rosa (ca. 3500m)

Auf der Straße fuhren wir nicht viel an diesem Tag – wegen des weiterhin hervorragenden Wetters entschieden wir uns dazu, einen weiteren Tag in Breuil-Cervinia zu bleiben und die Reise in die Höhe anstelle mit dem Wohnmobil diesmal mit Seilbahnen in Richtung des Plateau Rosa (auf etwa 3500m Höhe) fortzusetzen. Von dort aus hat man eine hervorragende Aussicht auf die beeindruckende Bergwelt rund um das Matterhorn, den bedauernswerten Gletscher auf seinem Rückzug und die sich darauf ergehenden Wintersport-Enthusiasten.
We did not use the roads much that day – due to the great weather, we decided to spend another day in Breuil-Cervinia and take the cable cars all the way up to Plateau Rosa (approx. 3500m of altitude). From there, one can enjoy a magnificent view to the impressive mountainous environment around Matterhorn, the regrettable glacier on its retreat and the winter sports enthousiasts having fun on it.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 11: Chiusa di San Michele – Aosta / Breuil-Cervinia (ca. 2000m) / Matterhorn

An diesem Tag fuhren wir, ohne lange in Chiusa di San Michele zu verweilen, in Richtung Aosta-Tal weiter, um schnellstmöglich das Matterhorn-Gebiet zu erreichen, für das wiederum hervorragendes Wetter angekündigt war. Staufrei passierten wir Turin und Ivrea, um bei Saint Vincent / Chatillion ins Tal der Marmore, Valtourneche, Richtung Breuil Cervinia abzubiegen. Schnell war das Talende auf ca. 2000m Höhe erreicht, so dass vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit noch Zeit für eine ausgiebige Wanderung mit herrlicher Aussicht auf Matterhorn und Umgebung blieb.
This day, without staying in Chiusa de San Michele for a long time, we continued our trip towards the Aosta valley in order to reach the Matterhorn area as quickly as possible. For the latter we had received a very promising weather forecast. Without any traffic jams, we passed by Torino and Ivrea and turned into Valtourneche with its Mamore river towards Breuil Cervinia at Saint Vincent / Chatillion. Having reached the end of the valley at about 2000m of altitude quickly, we were able to do a nice hike with great views towards Matterhorn and surroundings before the sun set.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 10: Lac des Eissaupres (2356m) – Chiusa / Sacra di San Michele

Der Tag begann mit wunderbaren Eindrücken am einsamen Lac des Eissaupres (2356m), nahe des Passes Col de la Bonette (2715m). Unsere Weiterfahrt nach Italien in Richtung Turin verlief dann wegen des temporär geschlossenen Passes Col de Larche etwas anders als geplant und wir hatten deshalb die Freude, Briancon noch einmal zur zu sehen/zu durchfahren. Endlich in Italien angekommen, endete der Tag dann schließlich im Örtchen Chiusa Di San Michele zur Übernachtung.
The day started with great impressions from the lonely Lac des Eissaupres (2356m), near  Col de la Bonette (2715m). Our journey to Italy direction Torino then went a bit different than planned, due to the temporary closure of the Col de Larche. Because of that, we had the pleasure to see/pass through Briancon again. Having finally reached Italy, the day then ended in the small town of Chiusa Di San Michele.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 9: Saint Martin Vesubie (960m), Madone de Fenestre (1908m), Lac des Eissaupres (2356m)

Den größten Teil des Tages verbrachten wir bei bestem Wetter im sehenswerten und entspannenden Madone de Fenestre (1908m) an der französisch-italienischen Grenze, einem beliebten Startpunkt für Bergwanderungen. Am späten Nachmittag ging es dann ins Tinée-Tal zurück, bereits im Dunklen überquerten wir den Col de la Bonette (2715m) nordwärts und hielten schließlich zum Übernachten am einsamen Lac des Eissaupres (2356m).
Most of the time today we spent with best weather in the attractive and relaxing  Madone de Fenestre (1908m) at the French-Swiss border. This is a popular starting point for hinking excursions. In the late afternoon we returned to the Tinée valley. Already at darkness we passed the Col de la Bonette (2715m) direction north and finally stopped for the night at the remote Lac des Eissaupres (2356m).

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 8: Villeneuve Loubet, Cote d’Azur – Saint Martin Vesubie

Nach drei Tagen Faulenzen an der Küste ging es dann bei bestem Wetter an Nizza vorbei wieder zurück in die Berge. Umständehalber fuhren wir an diesem Tag mehr und länger als notwendig oder sinnvoll und passierten unter anderem Col de Braus, Col de Turini, L’Aution, Pointe des Trois Communes sowie Vallon de la Gordolasque. Zum Übernachten blieben wir schließlich in Saint Martin Vesubie.
After three days of enjoying life at the mediterranean coast we went on, back to the mountains, passing Nice. Due to circumstances, we drove more than necessary or reasonable, visiting among others Col de Braus, Col de Turini, L’Aution, Pointe des Trois Communes and Vallon de la Gordolasque. We finally stopped to spend the night in Saint-Martin-Vesubie.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 4: Barcelonnette – Villeneuve Loubet, Cote d’Azur

Welch ein Glückstag – es ist schon eine sehr positive Erfahrung, wenn man Ende Oktober noch die Chance hat, bei angenehmen Temperaturen, blauem Himmel und Sonnenschein eine der höchsten befestigten Alpenstraßen überhaupt befahren zu können, in diesem Falle den Col de la Bonette. Die Eindrücke werden noch lange in unserem Gedächtnis bleiben. Nicht weniger angenehm, ab dem frühen Abend des Tages dann die Vorzüge der Cote d’Azur genießen zu können.
What a lucky day – it’s really a positive experience to have the chance at the end of October to drive up one of the highest hardened Alpine roads – in this case the Col de la Bonette – with pleasant temperatures, sunshine and blue sky. Those impressions will stay for a long time. Equally pleasent to profit from the advantages of the mediterranean Cote d’Azur from the early evening of the same day onwards.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 3: Briancon-Barcelonnette

Ein langer, aber herrlicher Reisetag – nach einem weiteren Spaziergang in der Altstadt von Briancon setzten wir bei bestem Wetter (blauem Himmel und Sonnenschein) die Fahrt über den Col d’Izoard und den Col de Vars in Richtung Barcelonnette fort. Spontan machten wir noch einen Abstecher ins bezaubernde Vallee de la Cerveyrette bis nach Les Fonts.
A long, but terrific travel day – after another walk through the historic city center of Briancon, we continued the trip at best weather, blue sky and sunshine via Col d’Izoard, Col de Vars towards Barcelonnette. We added spontaneously an excursion to the beautiful Vallee de la Cerveyrette all the way up to Les Fonts.

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 2: Chamonix-Briancon

Nach dem ursprünglichen Plan wollten wir nach dem Besuch von Chamonix bei Flumet auf die Route des Grandes Alpes in Richtung von Bourg-Saint-Maurice und Val d’Isere abbiegen (die Route des Grandes Alpes ist auf der Landkarte unten als dünne rote Linie dargestellt). Wegen des schlechten Wetters und der Niederschlagsvorhersage mussten wir jedoch improvisieren und entschieden uns, an diesem zweiten Reisetag über Albertville und, falls noch möglich, den Col du Galibier nach Briancon weiterzureisen. In Briancon sollten wir zwar ankommen, jedoch etwas anders als geplant …
According to the original plan, we intended to take the Route des Grandes Alpes towards Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Val d’Isere at Flumet when coming from Chamonix. Because of the bad weather and the precipitation forecast though, we had to improvise and decided to travel via Albertville and the Col du Galibier, if possible, towards Briancon. We actually made it to Briancon, but not quite as intended …

Alpen-Herbst/Autumn-Alp Tour – Tag/Day 1: Lörrach-Chamonix

Fangen wir den detaillierteren Teil des Reiseberichts an mit dem Tag, an dem wir zum ersten Mal Sichtkontakt mit den Alpen hatten. Die Fahrt an diesem Tag brachte uns von Lörrach an der Deutsch-Schweizerischen Grenze durch die Schweiz, vorbei an Montreux und Martigny nach Chamonix am Mont Blanc in Frankreich. Ab Martigny waren bereits die ersten beiden Pass-Straßen zu nehmen.
Let’s start the detailed part of our trip report with the day, on which we had first eye contact with the Alps. Our ride on that day led us from Lörrach at the German-Swiss border through Switzerland, passing Montreux and Martigny, ending in Chamonix at the Mont Blanc in France. Between Martigny and Chamonix, the first Alpine pass roads had to be taken.

Herbst-Tour durch die Alpen / Autumn tour through the Alps

Umständehalber ergab sich plötzlich die Möglichkeit zu einer zweiwöchigen Tour durch die Alpen – da darf man nicht lange zögern, sondern muss losfahren!
Da es während der Reise keine Möglichkeit gab zu schreiben und zu posten, fangen wir jetzt mit der Zusammenfassung an und setzen dann in den kommenden Blog-Posts mit den Details der Highlights (u.a. mit 15 Hochpunkten aus dem Denzel Alpenstraßenführer) fort.
Ganz grob ließen wir uns von der „Route des Grandes Alpes“ (in unserer Landkarte unten als dünne rote Linie eingezeichnet) inspirieren, auch wenn wir dieser nicht bis ins Detail folgen konnten oder wollten.

Due to circumstances, there suddenly was an opportunity for a two week tour through the Alps – no time to hesitate, but go for it!
As during the trip it was impossible to write and post, we are starting now with a short summary and intend to continue with posts about the details of the highlights, comprising among others 15 high points from Denzel’s famous Alpine road guide.
Very roughly, we took inspiration from the „Routes des Grandes Alpes“ (plot as a thin red line in our map below), even if we weren’t able or intending to follow it in all the detail.
