An diesem Tag fuhren wir, ohne lange in Chiusa di San Michele zu verweilen, in Richtung Aosta-Tal weiter, um schnellstmöglich das Matterhorn-Gebiet zu erreichen, für das wiederum hervorragendes Wetter angekündigt war. Staufrei passierten wir Turin und Ivrea, um bei Saint Vincent / Chatillion ins Tal der Marmore, Valtourneche, Richtung Breuil Cervinia abzubiegen. Schnell war das Talende auf ca. 2000m Höhe erreicht, so dass vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit noch Zeit für eine ausgiebige Wanderung mit herrlicher Aussicht auf Matterhorn und Umgebung blieb.
This day, without staying in Chiusa de San Michele for a long time, we continued our trip towards the Aosta valley in order to reach the Matterhorn area as quickly as possible. For the latter we had received a very promising weather forecast. Without any traffic jams, we passed by Torino and Ivrea and turned into Valtourneche with its Mamore river towards Breuil Cervinia at Saint Vincent / Chatillion. Having reached the end of the valley at about 2000m of altitude quickly, we were able to do a nice hike with great views towards Matterhorn and surroundings before the sun set.

31. Oktober 2017 – elfter Reisetag. Auf dem kommunalen Wohnmobil-Stellplatz am Fuße des beeindruckenden Klosterberges Sacra di San Michele (man beachte die sagenhaften Bilder in dem Wikipedia-Artikel) in Chiusa Di San Michele verbrachten wir eine ruhige Nacht. Man scheint sich um diesen schön angelegten Stellplatz nicht besonders zu kümmern, eine Gebühr wurde ebenfalls nicht eingefordert. So bedanken wir uns hiermit rein symbolisch für die Gastfreundschaft.
October 31st, 2017 – eleventh travel day. We had a quiet night on the communal camper parking right at the impressive hill of Sacra di San Michele (please note the impressive photos within the Wikipedia article). There doesn’t seem to be a lot of care for the parking and also we have not been asked to pay a fee. Thus we leave it with symbolic gratitude for the hospitality.
Aus Zeitgründen entschieden wir uns gegen einen Besuch auf dem sicherlich sehenswerten Klosterberg und starteten nach wie immer kräftigem Frühstück im Fahrzeug auf den Weg Richtung Aosta Tal. Auf E70, E64/A55 und E25/A5 passierten wir problemlos mit Autobahn-Tempo Turin und Ivrea. Wie schon in Frankreich ließen wir auch vor den italienischen Mautstationen den Druck in unserer Zusatzluftfederung auf den Minimalwert fallen. Wir können jedoch nicht genau sagen, ob dies auch zu einer Ersparnis geführt hat. In order to arrive early in Breuil Cervinia, we decided against a visit of the monastry hill, which for sure would have been impressive as well. After a good breakfast in the vehicle we started towards Aosta. On the E70, E64/A55 and E25/A5 we passed by Torino and Ivrea at highway speed and without any issues. Similar to what we did in France, we reduced the pressure in the additional air suspension to a minimum before the Italian highway toll booths. We cannot clearly state though, if this has actually saved us money in Italy as well. Bei Saint Vincent / Chatillion bogen wir ins Valtourneche ein und setzten die Fahrt wieder mit gewohnter Serpentinengeschwindigkeit bergan fort. In Antey Saint Andre wir zwei kleine Läden empfehlen, in denen wir leckere, authentische lokale Lebensmittel gekauft haben, einmal die “Cooperativa Velle del Marmore” und schräg gegenüber einen kleinen Supermarkt (Google Streeview zeigt hier noch offenbar das Vorgängergeschäft).
At Saint Vincent / Chatillion we turned towards North into Valtourneche and continued uphill with our usual hair pin speed. In Antey Saint Andre we can recommend two small shops where we bought tasty authentic local foodstuff, first of all the “Cooperativa Velle del Marmore” and on the other side of the street a small supermarket (Google Streeview is seemingly still showing the predecessor shop).
Nach einigen weiteren Kilometern Bergfahrt erreicht man dann auf ca. 2000m Höhe Breuil Cervinia (Denzel-Kennzahl 382). Wohnmobile sind offiziell von der Weiterfahrt ab dem Kreisverkehr nach dem Tunnel am Ortseingang ausgeschlossen und sollen auf dem ziemlich schmucklosen Stellplatz südlich des Tunnels geparkt werden. Warum dies so ist, insbesondere wenn in der Stadt vor Beginn der Ski-Saison noch gähnende Leere (insbesondere auch auf den Stadtparkplätzen ) herrschte, konnte uns weder die Touristeninformation noch die lokale Polizei schlüssig erläutern. Folglich machten wir uns dann zu Fuß auf den Weitermarsch auf die von Denzel suggerierte Straße in Richtung der Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi – bei dem herrschenden sonnigen Wetter eine tolle Erfahrung, wie die folgenden Bilder zeigen sollen. After a few more kilometers uphill we then reached Breuil Cervinia (Denzel code 382) at about 2000m of altitude. For campers it’s officially forbidden to proceed beyond the first roundabout after the tunnel at the town entry. The campers are supposed to park at the rather plain camper parking at the south side of the tunnel. Neither the tourist information nor the local police was able to explain to us convincingly why this rule exists, especially when in the pre-ski season the town and its large parkings are basically all empty. Anyway, we continued hinking, inspired by Denzel’s suggestion, towards Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi. A great experience as the following images might show. Click on the images to enlarge them.
Neben der herrlichen Natur fallen natürlich sofort die Narben auf, die der Ausbau der Ski-Infrastruktur hinterläßt. Mit technischem Großgerät, Bulldozern und Baggern, werden dem Berg neue Pisten abgerungen, neue Liftanlagen werden gebaut, teilweise ohne daß die alten, jetzt ungenutzten Anlagen entsorgt werden. Beschneiungsinfrastuktur ist vielerorts zu erkennen. Warum wir unser Wohnmobil vor dem Ortseingang stehen lassen mussten, bei dem ganzen Schwerlastverkehr in der Natur zum Wohle der Skifahrer, verstanden wir dann noch weniger.
Besides the beautiful nature, of course one immediately notes the scars left by the construction on ski infrastrutcure up there. With large scale machines such as caterpillars and excavators new ski slopes are created at even higher altitudes, new lift systems being erected, partly without the old, unused ones being removed or recycled. Also devices for artificial can be seen in many places. Especially in this context it’s hard to understand why we had stop driving in front of the town, while heavy hauling construction traffic is constantly busy in the fragile nature environment, to create infrastructure for skiers.
Unsere Wanderung endete schließlich in der Nähe des Restaurants Royame Du Cervin. In dessen Nachbarschaft befindet sich das “Kirchlein des Alpini-Battaillons Aosta”, in dem der Gefallenen des Ski-Alpinibataillons Monte Cervino gedacht wird. Wie man anhand der Bilder erkennen kann, war Papst Johannes Paul II. dort auch bereits Anfang der 90er Jahre zu Besuch.
Our walk finally ended near the restaurant Royame Du Cervin. Close to the latter there is the “Church of the Alpini Battaillon Aosta”, for the remembrance of victims of the ski Alpine batallion Monte Cervino. As you can see on the images, pope John Paul II. also visited this site in the early 90ies.
Bei der Rückkehr zum Fahrzeug stellen wir fest, dass sich auf dem Stadtparkplatz ein Vehikel vorschriftswidrig abgestellt hatte …
Returning to our car we noticed a vehicle which had parked against the rules …
Zwecks Übernachtung kehrten wir zum Wohnmobilstellplatz Breuil-Cervinia südlich des Tunnels am Ortseingang zurück.
To spend the night, we returned to the camper parking of Breuil-Cervinia south of the tunnel at the entrance of the town.
